Litter Training Your New Cat

Cats are often considered the easiest of pets to have. They require little oversight and generally are well behaved. However, bringing a new kitten home does require some learnings and that often requires litter training! Most adult cats choose a specific place to eliminate that you can easily guide them to. Kittens on the other hand, need a little guidance before they get the hang of proper habits.

Below are a few tips and tricks to get your new kitten in the habit!

  1. Choose the Correct Size Box: While it may seem that any litter box will do, cats do need a box that feels like the right size for them. Full-size boxes may feel overwhelming to kittens so it’s important to size down. Once grown, kittens can transition to standard size boxes.

  2. Choose the Correct Type: You will often see two types of litter boxes, covered and uncovered. Most cats prefer an uncovered box, however, you should give your cat a chance to explore which type feels best for them. Purchasing a box with a detachable roof can help you learn which type your cat likes most.

  3. Choose Where to Place the Box: While we’d often like to hide the boxes our cats eliminate in, it’s best for the box to be placed in an open area that is easily accessible to your pet. Once placed, don’t move it! Your cat should be able to find the box easily, every single time they look to eliminate.

Following the above tips will ensure your new kitten has all the tools it needs to start using its box with no issues. You can also add our Hinoki Cat Litter to better the experience as our litter is highly absorbent and sustainable to help do our part in saving the planet.
