Litter Training 101

Most adult cats naturally seek out granular places to eliminate waste but of course, young kittens need a bit of training before they learn the ins and outs of using a litter box. To guide them along, follow these tips and tricks that will set your kittens and cats up for litter box success!

  1. When Do I Start?: Most kittens are weaned from being cleaned by their mothers around 4 weeks. Kittens at this age can begin with a smaller litterbox to fit their size until they are ready to graduate to a larger one. If you adopt an older cat, you can begin right away as the cat just needs to be introduced to their new litter box as opposed to being taught how to use it

  2. How to Choose a Litter Box? Size matters! Your cat’s litter box should be about 1.5 times the size of the cat's. For kittens that means you will have to size up as they grow. Litter boxes come covered and uncovered with a vast majority of cats preferring uncovered as it mimics their natural habitat.

  3. Where Do I Place the Litter Box?: Place your cat's litter box in places that are out of the way but easy to find, you don’t want to distract your cat from taking care of business! If your home has more than one floor, it’s optimal to have at least one per floor. Additionally, if you have more than one cat, the rule is to have one more box than you have cats

  4. What Kind of Litter Should I Use? Your cat may have a preference for what type of litter they like which you will find out over time. Typically cats prefer litter that is softer and quick drying. Our Hinoki Cat Litter is perfect as it provides both and is also sustainably made to also help protect our planet.
